Growing Advice

Bearded iris are one of the easiest hardy evergreen perennials to grow. They grow from rhizomes and are available in a rainbow of colours. Requiring little care once established.

They grow well in areas with cold winters, southern states of Australia are ideal ( TAS, VIC, SA ) also cooler parts of NSW and QLD.

Bearded iris need full sun or at least afternoon sun, they will not flower in shade and well-drained soil. When replanting fertilize with a slow release fertilizer, I use Sudden Impact for roses. Watering in with a liquid seaweed tonic.

Plant the rhizomes so they are just covered with soil. Newly planted rhizomes need moisure to set down new roots, water every few days until the middle leaf in the fan starts to push up. Water once a week to help them establish over the summer. Once established they need very little water. In a dry summer you can water deeply once every week or two will be sufficient.

They need good air circulation, plant at least 30cms apart. They don't like other plants crowding them. Divide your clumps every 3-4 years, this can be done anytime, however the later you plant the more likely they may not flower the following spring.

To keep your irises in tip top condition keep free from weeds and debris, flower stems can be cut or snapped off at the base. Healthy leaves should be left undisturded, but diseased or brown leaves should be removed.

They can be grown in pots, if they are going to be in pots longer than a few months, ideally 30cm, I use Osmocote premium mix which has added slow release fertilizer. Replant into fresh mix after flowering each year.
